Punjab Battles Worst Flood Crisis in Decades: 30 Dead, Over 2.5 Lakh Affected as Rivers Overflow and Devastate Districts

Punjab is grappling with one of the most devastating natural disasters in its recent history, as relentless flooding over the past month has claimed at least 30 lives and affected more than 2.56 lakh people across the state. The Punjab government has declared it the worst flood crisis in decades, citing massive damage to life, property, and infrastructure.

Beginning in early August, heavy and persistent rainfall led to the swelling of major rivers — Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi — as well as seasonal drains. The surge in water levels has breached embankments, submerged vast swathes of agricultural land, and inundated residential areas in multiple districts including Ropar, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, and Ferozepur.

Unprecedented Water Levels in Rivers

The state’s river systems have been under immense pressure, with water flowing well above danger levels for several days. Authorities reported that the Beas and Sutlej rivers experienced one of their highest discharges in recent memory, overwhelming flood defenses in multiple regions. In some places, temporary flood barriers gave way under the force of the water, leading to sudden inundation of villages.

The situation was further aggravated by the release of excess water from dams such as Bhakra and Pong, which were already at near-full capacity. While the releases were necessary to prevent dam breaches, they added to the downstream chaos, displacing thousands of residents in low-lying areas.

Massive Humanitarian Impact

So far, over 2.5 lakh people have been impacted, with thousands forced to evacuate their homes. Emergency shelters have been set up in schools and community centers, while the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and Army units have been deployed for rescue and relief operations.

Food supplies, clean drinking water, and medical assistance remain urgent needs in flood-hit areas. The state government has launched relief camps and is distributing ration kits, but accessibility remains a challenge due to damaged roads and submerged routes.

Agricultural and Economic Devastation

Punjab’s economy — heavily reliant on agriculture — has taken a significant hit. Thousands of acres of standing paddy and maize crops have been destroyed, and livestock loss is being reported across districts. Farmers, already under economic stress, now face the additional burden of rebuilding from scratch.

Initial estimates suggest damages worth hundreds of crores, with long-term impacts likely on both rural livelihoods and the state’s overall economy. Experts warn that waterlogging and soil erosion may continue to affect agricultural productivity in the coming months.

Government Response and Appeals

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has called the crisis an “unprecedented calamity” and urged the central government to provide immediate financial aid and declare it a national disaster. He also announced compensation for affected families and a long-term rehabilitation plan once the waters recede.

As rescue operations continue, the focus remains on saving lives and ensuring essential supplies reach the worst-hit regions. With climate events becoming more extreme and frequent, experts say Punjab must now seriously invest in long-term flood management and sustainable water infrastructure.
