NDA Calls Bihar Shutdown on September 4 to Protest Offensive Remarks Against PM Modi’s Mother; Statewide Demonstrations Planned
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has announced a statewide shutdown in Bihar on September 4, calling for mass protests in response to offensive remarks allegedly made against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s late mother. The shutdown, which will take place from 7 AM to 12 PM, is being organized as a mark of respect and to condemn what NDA leaders have termed as a “new low in political discourse.”
The announcement came during a joint press conference held in Patna on Tuesday, where key NDA leaders from the BJP, JD(U), HAM, and other alliance partners condemned the derogatory comments made by a political rival. While the NDA has not officially named the individual in its public statement, sources suggest that the remarks were made by a senior leader of an opposition party during a recent rally.
“Insult to Every Indian,” Says NDA
NDA leaders described the comments not just as a personal attack on the Prime Minister, but as an insult to Indian culture and traditions, which hold mothers in the highest regard. Senior BJP leader and Union Minister Nityanand Rai stated, “Abusing the mother of the Prime Minister is not just political indecency — it’s a moral collapse. This is beyond politics. It’s an attack on our values.”
Echoing similar sentiments, Bihar BJP President Samrat Choudhary added that the protest was not limited to one party or leader, but was a call to society at large to stand against the growing toxicity in public life. “We urge the people of Bihar to support this symbolic bandh and send a strong message that such language has no place in democracy,” he said.
Shutdown to Be Peaceful, Say Organizers
The NDA has assured that the Bihar bandh will be peaceful and democratic, with party workers expected to organize protests, rallies, and sit-ins in district headquarters and major towns. Emergency services, including hospitals, ambulances, and essential goods transport, will not be obstructed.
However, the administration is on high alert to ensure law and order. Bihar’s DGP has reportedly held meetings with district magistrates and superintendents of police to ensure that the protests remain under control and do not disrupt public safety.
Political Reactions and Public Sentiment
The shutdown call has intensified the already charged political atmosphere in Bihar. Opposition parties, particularly the RJD and Congress, have accused the NDA of using the issue for political mileage ahead of the upcoming elections. However, many citizens across social media platforms have expressed shock at the nature of the alleged remarks, calling for greater civility in public discourse.
Civil society groups and neutral observers have called on all political parties to refrain from personal attacks and instead focus on real issues affecting the state. While the impact of the bandh remains to be seen, it has certainly brought attention back to the deteriorating tone of political conversation in India.
As Bihar braces for the shutdown, all eyes are on how the situation unfolds on September 4 — and whether it will serve as a wake-up call for restoring decency in political dialogue.
