Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Takes Strong Stand Against Arbitrary Fee Hikes by Private Schools, Vows to Protect Students’ Future

In a bold move aimed at curbing the rising commercialization of education, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has issued strict directives to the Education Department to address the issue of arbitrary fee hikes by private schools. Emphasizing the importance of accessible and equitable education for all, CM Gupta stated unequivocally that “children’s futures cannot be compromised” and such exploitative practices will not be tolerated under her administration.

The Chief Minister’s intervention comes amid growing complaints from parents across Delhi about unjustified fee hikes by several private institutions, often without prior approval from the education authorities. This surge in fees, particularly in the post-pandemic era, has placed a significant financial burden on families, many of whom are still recovering from economic challenges.

To tackle this pressing issue, CM Gupta has instructed the formation of special audit teams led by Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs) to conduct financial inspections of private schools. These teams have already completed audits of over 600 institutions, and initial reports have revealed serious irregularities in at least 10 of them. As a result, 11 schools, including some reputed names like DPS Dwarka, have been served show-cause notices demanding justification for their fee structures.

Rekha Gupta’s firm stance is being hailed as a landmark moment in Delhi’s education policy. For the first time, such a direct and structured approach is being used to hold private schools accountable for their financial practices. She further emphasized that no school has the authority to raise fees without the prior permission of the Directorate of Education, and any violation of this rule will invite strict legal and administrative action.

“Education is a fundamental right, not a privilege. No child should be denied quality education because of financial exploitation,” Gupta remarked during a press briefing. She also assured that the government would stand by parents and students in ensuring transparency and fairness in educational institutions.

Parents’ associations and civil society groups have lauded the government’s action, stating that it reflects a long-overdue recognition of the struggles faced by middle-class families. Several parents expressed relief that their concerns are finally being addressed at the highest level, and hope that this will lead to long-term reforms in the education sector.

Moreover, the Chief Minister has hinted at policy changes in the near future to strengthen regulatory mechanisms governing private schools. These may include mandatory disclosures of school finances, a cap on annual fee hikes, and more rigorous monitoring by the Directorate of Education.

In summary, CM Rekha Gupta’s decisive action signals a new era of accountability and fairness in Delhi’s private education system. By prioritizing students’ interests and safeguarding their right to affordable education, her administration is taking a stand against profiteering and reinforcing the principle that education should empower, not exploit.
