India’s CJP cockroach movement leaders claim minister promises talks on demands after exam scandal protests spark nationwide youth unrest and opposition support.

India’s youth‑driven “Cockroach Janta Party” (CJP) protests have rapidly evolved into one of the most significant political challenges of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third term. Sparked by the NEET medical entrance exam paper leak scandal, the movement has transformed from an online satire into a nationwide force demanding accountability, justice, and reform in the education system.

The protests began in May 2026 after the NEET exam leak forced nearly 2 million students to retake their tests. The scandal was linked to at least 12 student suicides, igniting outrage across campuses and social media. What started as memes under the banner of the “Cockroach Janta Party” soon became a serious mobilization of students, activists, and opposition leaders.

CJP leaders have outlined three central demands:

  • Resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, accused of failing to safeguard the integrity of national exams.
  • Release of Sonam Wangchuk, the Ladakhi activist on hunger strike for education reforms.
  • ₹1 crore compensation for families of students who died by suicide following the scandal.

Government Response

Union Minister J.P. Nadda met with CJP representatives, promising internal consultations and dialogue. However, no concrete commitments were made. Education Minister Pradhan has stated he is open to discussions but urged protesters to end sit‑ins and “restore normalcy.”

Meanwhile, police crackdowns in Delhi—including tear gas and baton charges—have intensified tensions. Protesters marching toward Parliament were dispersed, and several opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, were briefly detained.

Nationwide Spread

The movement has spread beyond Delhi to Mumbai, Goa, Bangalore, and Hyderabad, with students staging sit‑ins, candlelight vigils, and online campaigns. Social media has amplified the protests, making “Cockroach Janta Party” a trending hashtag and symbol of youth frustration with corruption and governance failures.

Opposition Role

Opposition parties have seized the moment, suspending parliamentary proceedings and joining demonstrations. Leaders argue that the scandal reflects deeper systemic failures in India’s education system. Their participation has given the movement political weight, though critics warn against opportunism.

The Cockroach Movement represents more than exam reform—it is a symbolic uprising of India’s youth against systemic corruption and lack of accountability. If the government fails to meet demands, protests could escalate, risking further unrest and political fallout.

At its core, the movement underscores the urgent need for education reforms, transparency, and youth engagement in governance. Whether the government chooses dialogue or confrontation will determine if this becomes a turning point in India’s political landscape.
