India’s youth‑driven “Cockroach Janta Party” (CJP) protests have rapidly evolved into one of the most significant political challenges of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third term. Sparked by the NEET medical entrance exam paper leak scandal, the movement has transformed from an online satire into a nationwide force demanding accountability, justice, and reform in the education system.
The protests began in May 2026 after the NEET exam leak forced nearly 2 million students to retake their tests. The scandal was linked to at least 12 student suicides, igniting outrage across campuses and social media. What started as memes under the banner of the “Cockroach Janta Party” soon became a serious mobilization of students, activists, and opposition leaders.
CJP leaders have outlined three central demands:
- Resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, accused of failing to safeguard the integrity of national exams.
- Release of Sonam Wangchuk, the Ladakhi activist on hunger strike for education reforms.
- ₹1 crore compensation for families of students who died by suicide following the scandal.
