In a significant move that has sparked widespread discussion, the Kerala Assembly has approved a resolution to rename the state, aiming to replace the current name with its Malayalam equivalent, “Keralam.” The resolution, which reflects a deep-rooted desire to embrace the state’s linguistic and cultural heritage, now awaits approval from the Central Government to become official.

The decision was reached after a lengthy debate in the Kerala Legislative Assembly, where members from various political parties voiced their support for the change. The Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan, emphasized the importance of aligning the state’s name with its indigenous identity. “The name ‘Keralam’ resonates deeply with our history, culture, and the sentiments of our people. It is only fitting that our state’s official name reflects this rich heritage,” he stated during the session.

Support for the resolution was not confined to the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF). Members of the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also expressed their approval, highlighting the non-partisan nature of this cultural assertion. Opposition leader V.D. Satheesan remarked, “This is not about political differences; it’s about respecting and preserving our cultural legacy. The name ‘Keralam’ holds significant historical and emotional value for the people of our state.”

The move to rename Kerala to Keralam is seen as part of a broader trend where states seek to assert their cultural and linguistic identities. In recent years, several Indian states have undergone similar changes, such as Orissa to Odisha and Bangalore to Bengaluru. These changes are often driven by a desire to honor local languages and traditions and to correct colonial-era spellings and names.

However, the resolution’s journey is far from over. For the name change to be officially recognized, it requires the approval of the Central Government. This involves a detailed process, including potential amendments to the Constitution and notifications in the official gazette. The proposal will be examined by various departments and ministries before it is presented to Parliament for final approval.

The state government has expressed optimism about gaining the Centre’s approval. The Chief Minister’s office has indicated that formal communications have already been initiated with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, which oversees such matters. “We are hopeful that the Centre will respect the democratic will of the Kerala Assembly and the cultural aspirations of our people,” a spokesperson from the Chief Minister’s office commented.

Public reaction to the proposed name change has been largely positive, with many Keralites expressing pride in the move. Social media platforms have seen a surge of support, with hashtags like #Keralam and #NameChange trending. Cultural organizations and prominent personalities have also voiced their approval, viewing the change as a step towards greater cultural affirmation.

Critics, however, have raised concerns about the logistical and financial implications of the name change. They point to the costs associated with updating official documents, signage, and promotional materials. Additionally, some have argued that the government should prioritize pressing economic and social issues over symbolic gestures.

Despite these concerns, the momentum behind the resolution indicates a strong collective desire to embrace a name that is seen as more authentic and representative of Kerala’s identity. As the proposal awaits Central Government approval, the people of Kerala remain hopeful that their cultural heritage will be officially recognized and celebrated through the adoption of the name “Keralam.
