Rekha Gupta, born on July 19, 1974, in Julana, Haryana, is an Indian politician serving as the 9th Chief Minister of Delhi since February 20, 2025. She is the fourth woman to hold this position in the national capital.
Education and Early Life
Rekha Gupta hails from a Hindu-Vaishya family. She completed her Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) from Daulat Ram College, Delhi University, and later earned a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from IMIRC College of Law Bhaina, Ghaziabad, affiliated with Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut, in 2022.
Political Career
Gupta’s political journey began as a student leader at Delhi University, where she served as the President of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) from 1996 to 1997. She was also a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and started her political journey as a member of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
She was elected as a councillor from North Pitampura in 2007 and served three terms. Gupta also held the position of Mayor of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC). In 2022, she contested for the Mayor’s post in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) against AAP’s Shelly Oberoi.
In the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, Gupta won the Shalimar Bagh constituency with a margin of 29,595 votes, defeating AAP’s Bandana Kumari. She was subsequently elected as the Leader of the BJP Legislative Party in Delhi and sworn in as Chief Minister on February 20, 2025.
